Around 2,000 years ago, Jesus’ disciples were given this commissioning and command before Jesus left them: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8, NIV).
That command holds true for us Christ-followers today! Those of us with the thrill for adventure eagerly look at the prospect of serving “to the ends of the earth.” Others of us wish Jesus had never given this command, because it pushes us far out of our comfort zones – even the idea of looking the Walmart cashier in the eye and smiling is intimidating. But it is a command, and we are called to obey!
Often when we think of missions, we think of the rainforests or sugarcane villages, speaking a different language, and completely different cultures. We don’t usually think of the next state over, yet that is part of Jesus’ commission, too. At SCORE, we have several different mission locations in the United States. Oftentimes the people in our US locations know as little about Jesus as the people in a different country and culture. So, we always love when teams sign up to go on our US mission trips to meet the need for Jesus’ love in their own country!
