Following God’s redirection and holding plans loosely go hand in hand with being a Christ follower, or at least they should. Our plans aren’t always God’s plans, and God’s plans are the best plans. Sometimes that’s something only seen in hindsight. But it is always true.
Kelly Kemp grew up in a Christian home, accepted Jesus as her Savior at a young age, and went on mission trips in high school. She went to school for pre-med for two years, and then at 20 years old, she felt God redirecting her towards full-time vocational ministry. With the redirection in her heart, Kelly asked God, “What do you want me to do?” She held out her plans to God, and He gave her peace and direction to follow Him to the mission field.
After studying Spanish in college and visiting several different countries, God opened the doors to Argentina and placed a passion in Kelly’s heart for the people there. She has now been serving in Argentina for seven years with SCORE. She serves through the local church, focusing primarily on discipleship. She works with teenagers and young adults, specifically with the women. Another aspect of her ministry is translating for mission teams when they come down. Thus far, no SCORE mission teams have come down, but she has translated for other mission groups that have come to serve. Her ministry is focused around relationships – as true ministry should be, following Jesus’ example. She loves, disciples, and invites people into relationship, showing and sharing the love of Jesus.
One of the girls she is discipling now, Fatima, asked Jesus into her heart a year and a half ago. They started their discipleship six months ago. Fatima began discipleship pretty closed – not wanting to pray, not wanting to share anything, afraid to be very open. Recently, when their small group met and Kelly asked who wanted to pray, Fatima said, “I will.” Kelly’s mouth almost hit the floor. Fatima had gone from saying absolutely no, never, to volunteering to pray! God had been working on Fatima’s heart all through those six months, and it has just taken some time for her to respond – but she did!
Kelly plans to continue discipling those around her, but her goal in the future is to have more mission teams come down. She would love to take those teams into the city to evangelize and then do the follow up work of relationships and discipleship once the teams have left. She can only do what one person can, but she hopes that God will provide short-term teams to serve alongside her in evangelism.
