Ministry in Harlan focuses on meeting the physical and spiritual needs of families in rural Appalachia through partnerships with local churches. Teams serve in a variety of ways, including community outreach, food and clothing distribution, light construction, and medical or addiction recovery assistance. Teams also lead VBS programs, Backyard Bible Clubs, sports clinics, and prayer walks. Outreach efforts often include Spanish-speaking ministry and senior citizen programs, with every activity pointing people to Christ and strengthening the connection between the community and the local church.

Known for its coal-mining roots and tight-knit community, the area faces ongoing challenges related to poverty, unemployment, and addiction.
