Purified Clean Drinking Water Initiative

“Providing Living water both physically and spiritually”

In many of the Dominican Republic villages served by SCORE International, there are families trying to survive day after day with no access to fresh clean water. Using Jesus Christ as our example, we feel it is our ministry and responsibility to represent the love of Christ both physically and spiritually.

SCORE International, Inc. and Water@Work Ministry are teaming up to bring this much needed help to the families we serve.

• (Meeting the Physical Need) SCORE has strategically installed Water House filtration systems in targeted areas of the Dominican Republic providing purified clean drinking water.
• (Meeting the Spiritual Need) These Water Houses are installed adjacent or connected to a village church plant served by SCORE International. As families come to receive clean water for their daily needs, they will also be ministered to spiritually by the church’s pastor–providing access to the much needed PHYSCIAL and SPIRITUAL water each and every day.

Unsafe Water Facts:

• Unsafe water and inadequate sanitation account for 88% of the 4 billion cases of diarrhea reported worldwide annually. Upwards of 5,000 cases of diarrhea are reported weekly in the Dominican Republic. Diarrhea is the leading cause of diagnosed death among children ages 1 to 4 in the Dominican Republic. Access to potable water is sporadic and unreliable.
• A child dies every 15 seconds as a direct result of water borne illnesses.
• More than a billion people do not have access to safe water and well over 2 billion people live without adequate sanitation. At any given time, more than half of the developing world’s population is suffering from one or more of the main diseases associated with unsafe water and poor sanitation.
• For children, the chances of survival dwindle in the absence of these essentials. Every day, 6,000 children die of water-related diseases. Young children are the first to get sick and die from waterborne and sanitation-related illnesses—including diarrheal diseases and malaria.
• The costs of inaction: unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene result in countless deaths and a huge burden of disease among young children – almost all of it preventable.
• More than four billion cases of diarrhea cause 2.2 million deaths—mostly of children under the age of five. As immune systems are progressively compromised with each bout of diarrhea, related illnesses indirectly kill millions more each year.
• Parasitic illnesses, such as guinea worm and trachoma, abound in environments with unsafe water and deficient sanitation. At the very least they sap children of vitality – and at their worst cause blindness and sometimes death. Poor hygiene is a conduit for these diseases.
• Without access to safe water and adequate sanitation, families remain mired in deplorable conditions. Young children die from preventable diseases. Those who survive are often unable to learn in school or succeed in life because of the legacy of ill health in their early years and the burden of recurring illnesses.
