Cultural Education Video

As you prepare to travel overseas, it’s valuable to be aware of common cultural differences. Several basic values cause people to act the way they do. You’ll need to observe and learn how those in your host community live out these values, and in the process you’ll better understand how you live out those values. SCORE International seeks to do missions work with excellence and with long-term results that will bring Glory to God.

Please include this video as part of your training in preparing to serve through your short-term missions team. This will require some time for discussion and reflection as a group. This will help you as a team to be effective in meeting the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of the people you will serve. This video was prepared in the Dominican Republic but the principles can be applied in any culture. Thank you for your willingness to learn and serve alongside us.

Dominican Republic Video

God has blessed SCORE with a beautiful complex in the Dominican Republic. The Missionary Training Center is located in the town of Juan Dolio, only one block from the beach. Juan Dolio is on the southern coastline close to San Pedro de Marcoris. The D.R. shares the island Hispaniola with the country of Haiti. Nearly 80% of the country’s 49,000 is covered with mountains. About 2.5 million of the country’s 10 million residents live in the capital, Santo Domingo. Over 10% of the population is of Haitian descent. About half of the population is believed to be involved in occult practices. Extreme poverty is prevalent in many sugar cane villages.

Costa Rica Video

SCORE headquarters in Costa Rica is in a suburb of the capital city of San Jose, called Sabanilla. The San Jose region is basically in the middle of the country. From San Jose, SCORE groups will be in a strategic location to minister in various locations throughout the country. This coastal country is known more for its natural beauty than its cultural heritage. It is one of the richest and most diverse biological areas in the world with a wide variety of climate zones and extraordinary wildlife. The main exports are bananas, coffee, and textiles.
