Over the past 24 years, I have had the great privilege of traveling on many short-term mission trips with SCORE International. Many of these trips were with Calvary Baptist Red Bank, the church where I was a youth pastor and then Senior Pastor. There are many extraordinary memories from those trips that I will cherish and carry with me the rest of my life. What made some of those trips extra special is that my wife and kids got to join me. To see people transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ is so incredible, and to see people that travel with you be deeply and eternally impacted by the trip is special to witness.
I witnessed the life-transforming nature of mission trips again this past year, on two different trips with Baylor School, where my two youngest kids attend high school. They both had the privilege to travel with their coaches and teammates on mission trips. My son and his team traveled to Costa Rica for football outreach and my daughter and her team traveled to the Dominican Republic for basketball outreach. These two teams were able to use their sport as a platform to share their faith with the other athletes in Costa Rica and the DR. For some of the teammates, the trip showed them what true faith looks like, and they received the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Two of these teammates desired to be discipled and understand what it truly meant to follow Jesus Christ. As a matter of fact, one young man (Ivan) made his faith public and was baptized in front of his family, friends, and fellow teammates.
These trips were not only a great way to serve local communities through sports ministry with my kids, but an opportunity to share the gospel and make disciples of all nations, even after we returned home. It is a great privilege to disciple these two young men each week. Even in these times of social distancing, we have been able to meet virtually to continue our discipleship. This is a classic example of fruit that remains from a short-term mission trip with SCORE International.
“And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also”. 2 Timothy 2:2
