I have recently been thinking a lot about the core values of SCORE International, and how we can stay true to them in these uncertain times. The core values of SCORE are:
1. Evangelize the lost and disciple the believer in obedience to the Great Commission
2. Engage people in missions with a commitment to excellence
3. Equip others to understand and steward their gifts
4. Express the Gospel through meeting needs
The umbrella of SCORE’s ministries has a significant reach, including sports ministry, church planting, short term mission trips, discipleship, food distribution, anti-human trafficking initiatives, clean water projects, a sending agency for missionaries, domestic ministry, a GAP program, child sponsorship, and more. As you can see, all of the ministries of SCORE International connect back to the values of SCORE.
Today, I wanted to take some time to discuss the final core value, which is “Express the Gospel through meeting needs.” I am personally drawn to this core value, because it is something I believe we are all equipped to do. James 1:22 says, “Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” If I am not careful, I can take that verse and think of all the things the Bible says to do, and really start to overwhelm myself. However, it all becomes simple for me to understand when I study the message of Jesus.
In John 21:17, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him. By the final time, Peter was a little exasperated and said, “Lord you know all things, you know that I love you!” Jesus then replied to him, “Feed my sheep.” In this passage, Jesus was clearly teaching Peter how to be a “doer of the Word.” He was telling Peter to not just say that he loves Him, but to show he loves Him by following His example and caring for people’s needs. When SCORE International meets people’s needs, we are converting our faith in Jesus into action.
When our missionaries and short-term teams help meet people’s needs, they will tangibly see our love for Christ poured out to them in service. They can see us feeding Jesus’ sheep. Throughout this pandemic, SCORE is still committed to expressing the Gospel through meeting needs. We are also using this time to locate specific needs of people in areas that we serve across the United States. Although travel is still uncertain, we are making plans to be ready to mobilize as a ministry once it is safe to do so. Currently, we have several opportunities to serve in the USA in July. If you live near any of these areas, would you consider serving with us? Maybe this will be your chance to express the Gospel by meeting the needs of someone else.
