Charina is the reason that Pasitos de Jesus first began in 2009. Charina is a lovely girl who has Down Syndrome. With several misconceptions about special needs in the Dominican, many families see special needs children as a shame on the family with the parents often feeling at fault or punished by God to bear a child with special needs. In Charina’s case, her mother’s shame manifested itself by quarantining Charina in the backyard along with the dogs. Charina was raised in such horrific conditions, in isolation and as an animal. When her mother was electrocuted to death in 2009, Charina escaped from the backyard and was found in the street, on all fours, behaving as a dog. This was the first time any neighbors realized Charina existed. The community brought Charina to Dalma, who the Lord led to take Charina in, and so began Pasitos de Jesus ministry. Now, Charina is a caring and affectionate girl, who has learned to speak in short phrases, and is very intelligent. She loves to play, listen to music, and eat food!
